
Investors have spent 2026 treating the memory supercycle as an SK Hynix-and-Samsung earnings story. That framing is now out of date. The real trade has moved downstream: contract DRAM prices are still climbing into the third quarter 1, and the squeeze has fully reached the Asian device makers who actually consume the chips. Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, vivo, Honor, Lenovo, Acer and Asus are all now absorbing or passing through costs that were unthinkable twelve months ago, while a second, quieter beneficiary has emerged in Taiwan's legacy DRAM suppliers. For portfolios positioned only around HBM leaders, this is the part of the cycle that is easiest to misprice.
Samsung is reportedly seeking up to a 20 percent increase in average DRAM selling prices for third-quarter contracts, with LPDDR mobile memory hikes potentially exceeding that figure 1. TrendForce data shows consumer-grade DRAM shortages have now spread even to legacy DDR2 products, with contract prices expected to keep rising through the third quarter as manufacturers continue reallocating wafer capacity toward high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators 7. That reallocation is the structural root of the story: every wafer diverted to HBM is a wafer not available for the conventional memory that goes into a phone or laptop, and Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron between them control the overwhelming majority of that supply.
The clearest transmission channel has been China's handset makers. Vivo and Oppo have both raised device prices directly, citing surging memory costs as the driver 3, while Nikkei reporting picked up by financial wires shows Xiaomi, Oppo and vivo cutting shipment targets by as much as 30 percent as they ration components and protect margin rather than chase volume 4. The same mechanics are now visible in laptops. The more interesting divergence for investors sits one layer back in the supply chain. As Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron chase HBM's higher margins, legacy DRAM production has become scarce enough that Taiwan-based suppliers who never had HBM ambitions are capturing outsized pricing power in the conventional memory left behind. Powerchip's second-quarter gross margin reportedly reached 28 percent, up roughly 18 percentage points quarter-on-quarter, as demand for legacy nodes outstripped the bit output Taiwanese vendors can supply 8. Nanya Technology and Winbond have been able to curtail lower-margin lines and redirect capacity toward higher-value legacy parts, improving profitability without needing a single HBM qualification. That is a materially different equity story from the AI-accelerator narrative driving Samsung and SK Hynix, and it is being priced by a much smaller set of investors.
Three distinct exposures are now separating inside what looks superficially like one memory story. First, HBM leaders (Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron) continue to benefit from AI capacity allocation, but that trade is already well owned and well understood by the market. Second, downstream device OEMs — particularly China's thinner-margin smartphone brands and PC makers without captive memory supply — face genuine margin compression that shipment-target cuts confirm is already showing up in guidance, not just spot prices. Third, and least crowded, is the Taiwan legacy-DRAM cohort capturing scarcity rents on products the majors have deprioritized. With supply-side warnings from Samsung and SK Hynix pointing to shortages persisting into 2027 and beyond, this is not a one-quarter dislocation. Investors underweight the device-maker margin risk, or unaware of the Taiwan legacy-chip windfall, are working from last cycle's map.
The next signal is Samsung's actual third-quarter contract settlements against its 20 percent ask 1, alongside whether Chinese brands' shipment cuts stabilize or deepen as the holiday season approaches. A widening gap between Taiwan legacy-chip margins and mainstream device-OEM margins would confirm this is a durable structural split rather than a temporary pricing spike, and would argue for rotating exposure within Asian tech hardware rather than treating the sector as a single trade.
