Pegatron's AI Server Profit Surged Fourteen-Fold This Quarter. It's Already Stockpiling Parts for a Shortage Next Year.

The Fourteen-Fold Quarter

Pegatron told investors on August 12 what a decade of AI server demand crammed into two quarters looks like on a balance sheet. Net profit attributable to the parent company jumped 1,463.8% year-over-year to roughly NT$4.49 billion, and earnings per share rose from NT$0.11 to NT$1.68 1. Consolidated revenue reached NT$274.45 billion, up 12.4% quarter-over-quarter, a modest 2.7% year-over-year figure that masks the real story: computing product revenue, the bucket that holds AI servers, surged 84% year-over-year and gross margin improved 1.3 percentage points to 4.4% 1. Management said servers have become one of the group's three largest business units for the first time in the company's history, and reiterated confidence in the roughly tenfold AI server revenue growth target it set back in March 1.

That target is not a rounding exercise. Pegatron is now targeting close to NT$100 billion in annual server revenue contribution and has readied more than NT$30 billion in fresh fundraising to fund the buildout, according to the same disclosures 3. For a contract manufacturer that built its business on laptops and phones, a single product category is about to become large enough to justify a capital raise on its own.

Buying the Shortage Before It Arrives

The more revealing disclosure came a day later. Pegatron confirmed it has stationed procurement staff directly inside supplier factories to lock down materials, and said it has already secured most of its CPU, memory and SSD needs for the second half of 2026 2. It is not stopping there: the company said it began building component inventory for the first half of 2027 well before demand materializes, a hedge it credits to stockpiling decisions made as early as late 2025 2. Memory and CPUs have been tight for more than six months; PCB materials, power components and multilayer ceramic capacitors, known as MLCCs, are now added to that list, with sourcing pushed as far upstream as fiberglass-fabric suppliers in Japan 2.

That is an unusual admission from a company simultaneously boasting about record profit. It means Pegatron's own growth forecast is, in part, a bet that its rivals will not out-buy it for the same scarce inputs.

Ceramic Capacitors Are the New Bottleneck

The MLCC squeeze is not Pegatron-specific; it is structural. TrendForce warned in June that cloud providers building in-house AI ASICs are concentrating demand into a narrow band of high-end X6S-spec capacitors, and that lead times on that spec have stretched from around eight weeks to as long as twenty 5. AI server assembly is crowding out capacity that used to serve notebooks, handsets and autos, tightening component supply for the entire consumer-electronics chain, not just data-center hardware 5. Pegatron's early-buy strategy reads less like caution and more like a recognition that whoever secures allocation first keeps shipping while competitors wait.

The demand side keeps validating the urgency. TrendForce raised its 2026 global AI server shipment forecast to nearly 31% year-over-year growth in early August, up from an already-bullish 28% estimate in January, citing a roughly 40% jump in combined capital spending from the five largest North American cloud providers as the AI market shifts from training workloads toward inference at scale 4.

The Money Behind the Race

Pegatron is not alone among Taiwanese contract manufacturers racing to convert that demand into capacity before the equipment and materials run out. Quanta Computer raised its 2026 capex guidance to roughly NT$40 billion at its own August 13 earnings call, telling investors that customer order visibility now extends into 2028 6. ASE Technology, the world's largest chip-packaging house, lifted its 2026 capex target to a record US$10.5 billion in late July, up US$2 billion in a single revision, as advanced-packaging demand for AI chips continues to outstrip supply 7. Each of these moves is a bet that the AI buildout window stays open long enough to earn back the spending, and each adds one more buyer competing for the same scarce fab tools, substrate capacity and passive components.

Pegatron's US footprint is part of the same calculus. Its Georgetown, Texas plant, aimed at Nvidia's GB300 server platform, was on track for production in the first quarter of 2026 8, giving Pegatron a domestic assembly base as customers and, increasingly, US policy push AI hardware production onshore. That plant does nothing to solve the component shortage; the parts still have to come from the same tight global suppliers before they reach Texas or Taiwan.

What It Means for Investors

The headline numbers make Pegatron look like a straightforward AI-server winner, and on the demand side it is. But this quarter's disclosures show margin quality now hinges on a company's ability to out-procure its peers for memory, capacitors and PCB substrate as much as on winning server orders. Watch Pegatron's inventory-build cadence and its capex-to-revenue ratio over the next two quarters: aggressive pre-buying protects near-term shipments but raises the risk of writedowns if AI server demand cools before that 2027 inventory ships. For now, the component shortage that once looked like a risk to the AI buildout has become the thing separating which contract manufacturers can actually keep pace with it.
